In short
For support teams, the closest Intercom alternatives are Zendesk (larger omnichannel teams), Freshchat (free seats and AI sessions included to start) and HubSpot's Customer Agent ($0.50 per resolved conversation, for HubSpot CRM users). Smaller teams can save with Crisp (priced per workspace) or Tidio (free plan), and Shopify stores with Gorgias. If you're a small business that only needs your website to answer common questions, you may not need a helpdesk at all: Nexoply is a website AI assistant from free to $99 a month, not a helpdesk. Prices were checked on each vendor's pricing page on October 7, 2026.
- Intercom has no free plan; Fin costs $0.99 per outcome on top of per-seat helpdesk pricing, and WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go.
- Full support suites: Zendesk, Freshchat (Freddy AI) and HubSpot Service Hub with Customer Agent.
- Lower-cost team inboxes with AI: Crisp (per workspace) and Tidio (free plan, Lyro AI add-on).
- Ecommerce: Gorgias. Small support and sales teams: ChatBot.com.
- A website that only needs to answer questions: Nexoply, which is a website assistant, not a helpdesk.
How we chose these Intercom alternatives
Intercom is a customer support platform with a strong AI agent, so we compared tools that can take over all or part of that job. For each one we read its pricing page on October 7, 2026 and looked at four things: whether there's a free plan, how seats are priced, how the AI is charged (per outcome, per session, credits or included), and which channels cost extra.
Intercom's own seat prices displayed inconsistently when we checked, so we don't quote them here: see Intercom's pricing page for current figures.
What Intercom does well
It's worth being fair about what makes Intercom popular before replacing it:
- Fin, a capable AI agent, charged per outcome: at most once per conversation, and not when the customer asks for a person.
- A mature helpdesk: inbox, ticketing, help center and workflows in one product.
- Fin works on other helpdesks too, so teams on Zendesk, Salesforce or HubSpot can use it without moving.
- Spending controls for usage-based AI.
Why teams look for an Intercom alternative
From Intercom's pricing page as of October 7, 2026. These are trade-offs that weigh most on smaller teams and tight budgets.
- No free plan. There's a 14-day trial, then you pay.
- Two costs. Fin's $0.99 per outcome comes on top of per-seat helpdesk pricing, so the bill depends on both team size and AI volume.
- Usage-based billing. A busy month, such as a launch or a holiday sale, means a bigger AI bill.
- Extra channels cost extra. WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go.
- Built for support teams. Seats, inbox and workflows are more than a small business website usually needs.

Quick picks by situation
- A larger team on email, messaging and phone: Zendesk.
- A small team that wants to start free: Freshchat for up to 10 agents, adding Freddy AI later.
- Your customer data lives in HubSpot: HubSpot Customer Agent.
- You want to stop paying per seat: Crisp (per workspace) or Gorgias (never per agent).
- A small team or store on a budget: Tidio.
- A Shopify store with lots of order questions: Gorgias.
- Sales and support chat with a fixed AI allowance: ChatBot.com.
- No support team, just a website that should answer: Nexoply.
1. Zendesk: best for larger omnichannel teams
Zendesk is the most direct like-for-like replacement: a customer service suite for email, messaging, social and phone, with AI agents built into every Suite and Support edition.
- Pricing: per agent; no free plan, a 14-day trial. On Zendesk's European pricing page, Support Team is €19, Suite Team €55 and Suite Professional €115 per agent a month billed annually (€25, €69 and €149 billed monthly). AI agents are usage-based and count only automated resolutions. Prices in other currencies depend on your region. Zendesk pricing.
- Strengths: mature omnichannel ticketing, AI agents for messaging, email and voice, replies translated into many languages, a large app ecosystem.
- Considerations: like Intercom, it combines per-agent pricing with AI usage, so it won't simplify the bill; designed for teams, not a single owner.
- Best for: support teams with steady volume across several channels.
2. Freshchat (Freddy AI): best for growing teams on a budget
Freshchat is Freshworks' messaging and live-chat product with the Freddy AI Agent and Copilot. Freshworks also sells Freshdesk for email ticketing; check its own pricing page if you need both.
- Pricing: Free for up to 10 agents (no AI agent). Growth $19, Pro $49 and Enterprise $79 per agent a month billed annually. The Freddy AI Agent includes the first 500 sessions, then costs $49 per 100 sessions; Copilot is $29 per agent a month billed annually. Freshchat pricing.
- Strengths: a real free tier for human chat, a block of AI sessions included, many messaging channels.
- Considerations: three cost parts (agents, AI sessions, optional Copilot); the AI agent isn't on the free plan.
- Best for: small and mid-size teams that want to start free and add AI as they grow.
3. HubSpot Customer Agent: best for HubSpot CRM users
HubSpot offers free live chat and basic bots, and an AI agent called Customer Agent in Service Hub. Its advantage over Intercom is that the agent works with what your CRM already knows about each customer.
- Pricing: free tools with HubSpot branding. Customer Agent is on Service Hub Professional and Enterprise and uses 50 HubSpot credits ($0.50) each time it resolves a conversation without a person (since April 14, 2026). Professional has a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee. HubSpot pricing.
- Strengths: CRM context, a lower per-resolution price than Fin's $0.99, a free entry point for basic chat.
- Considerations: the AI agent needs Professional seats plus the onboarding fee; the best value is for teams already on HubSpot.
- Best for: sales-led businesses whose customer records are in HubSpot.
4. Crisp: best for small teams that want flat pricing
Crisp is a shared inbox and live chat for teams, priced per workspace instead of per seat, with an AI agent, copilot and knowledge base on paid plans.
- Pricing: Free plan without AI. Mini $45, Essentials $95 and Plus $295 a month per workspace, with AI credits worth $5, $25 and $75 (about 90, 450 and 1,350 automated conversations). The autonomous AI Agent and white label are on Plus. Crisp pricing.
- Strengths: adding teammates doesn't raise the price, many channels, translation in 50+ languages.
- Considerations: no AI on Free; the fully autonomous AI Agent needs the top plan.
- Best for: teams of several people who answer chats themselves and want predictable costs.
5. Tidio: best for small teams and online stores on a budget
Tidio combines live chat, a helpdesk, automation flows and the Lyro AI agent. It's a lighter, cheaper starting point than Intercom for small teams and stores.
- Pricing: Free with 50 billable conversations a month and 50 Lyro conversations one-off. Starter $29 a month billed monthly ($24.17 annually); Growth from $59 ($49.17); Plus from $300 a month. Lyro is an add-on from $39 a month billed monthly ($32.50 annually) for 50 Lyro conversations a month. Branding removal is an add-on from Growth. Tidio pricing.
- Strengths: a real free plan, Shopify and other ecommerce integrations, a multichannel inbox.
- Considerations: the AI is a separate add-on, and chats and Lyro conversations are counted separately.
- Best for: small teams that want live chat plus some AI without a support-platform price.
If Tidio is on your shortlist, see the best Tidio alternatives and Nexoply vs Tidio.
6. Gorgias: best for ecommerce stores
Gorgias is a helpdesk with an AI agent built for stores on Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce. Its AI can act on orders, and it's never priced per agent.
- Pricing: no free plan; a free trial. Helpdesk with AI from $40 a month billed monthly (50 tickets and 30 automated interactions); AI at $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction depending on the plan. Gorgias pricing.
- Strengths: deep Shopify integration, AI that takes order actions, no seat fees.
- Considerations: built for ecommerce only; ticket-volume pricing.
- Best for: online stores where most questions are about orders, returns and shipping.
7. ChatBot.com: best for small support and sales teams
ChatBot.com (by Text, formerly LiveChat Software) is an AI agent and chatbot builder for customer support and ecommerce sales, with human takeover.
- Pricing: no free plan; a 14-day trial. Essential $25 per user a month billed monthly ($19 yearly) with 10 AI resolutions a month; Growth $99 per user a month billed monthly ($79 yearly) with 200. Extra AI resolutions cost $49.50 per 50. ChatBot.com pricing.
- Strengths: AI resolutions bundled into the plan, 48 languages, an ecommerce focus.
- Considerations: per-user pricing, a small AI allowance on Essential, white label only on Enterprise.
- Best for: small teams that want a fixed monthly AI allowance rather than open-ended usage.
8. Nexoply: for small businesses that only need website answers
Some small businesses try Intercom because they want their website to answer questions, then find they're paying for a support platform. Nexoply is not a helpdesk and doesn't try to replace Intercom for a support team. It's an AI assistant for small business websites: you enter or import your services and prices, FAQs, policies, opening hours and service areas, and it answers visitors from that information only, saying so when it doesn't know.
- Pricing: Free with 50 conversations a month, no credit card. Starter $19, Business $49 and Pro $99 a month billed monthly ($190, $490 and $990 billed yearly). The AI is included; there are no seats or per-outcome fees. See the pricing page.
- Strengths: set up by the owner in minutes from a website import; 12 languages; one line of code on any site; every conversation in a dashboard, with unanswered questions turned into FAQs in one click.
- Considerations: no inbox or ticketing for a team, no human handover inside the tool, no email, WhatsApp, Instagram or phone channels, no order tracking, and no bookings or payments (it links to your booking page, phone or WhatsApp). One chatbot per business.
- Best for: a salon, clinic, restaurant, hotel or trades business without a support team, whose customers ask the same questions about prices, hours and policies.
Keep Fin, change the helpdesk?
If you like Fin but not the rest of the bill, there's a middle path: Fin also runs on other helpdesks, such as Zendesk, Salesforce or HubSpot, with a minimum monthly commitment. That keeps the AI your customers already know while you move the inbox and seats to another platform.
It makes sense when the AI is working well and the friction is elsewhere: seat costs, a CRM you've standardised on, or a helpdesk your team prefers. It doesn't help if the per-outcome AI cost is the problem, because Fin is still charged per outcome.
What the AI costs at 100 and 500 conversations a month
Per-resolution pricing is easiest to compare with a simple calculation. The table shows only the AI part of the bill at list prices, for 100 and 500 conversations a month that the AI handles on its own. Seats, plan fees and onboarding come on top where they apply.

Two cautions: "outcome", "resolution", "session" and "conversation" are each vendor's own unit, and Nexoply's number counts every website conversation, not just resolved ones, because it has no human team to hand over to. For more worked examples, see how much an AI chatbot costs.
When Intercom is worth it
Intercom often earns its price. It's likely the right choice if:
- You have a support team with seats that are busy every day, and Fin's resolutions save real agent time.
- You need mature workflows, ticketing and a help center in one place.
- Paying only when Fin resolves a conversation suits you better than a fixed AI fee.
- You value a strong AI agent and are prepared to manage usage-based costs with spending limits.
In that case, the cheaper move may be to adjust seats or plans rather than switch platforms, since a migration costs your team time too.
Switching from Intercom: a checklist
Map what you use
List channels, seats, workflows, help center articles and integrations in use today. That's your requirements list for the new tool.
Export your FAQs and content
Export help center articles, saved replies and the content Fin answers from. Clean answers and up-to-date policies matter more to any AI than the tool itself.
Test with real questions
Take 20 recent customer questions, including tricky ones, and ask them on each candidate. Check that answers come from your content and that the AI admits when it doesn't know.
Compare cost at your volume
Price each option at your real seats, channels and monthly AI conversations, billed monthly or annually, including onboarding fees.
Check branding and channels
Confirm what removing the vendor's branding costs, and whether WhatsApp, SMS or phone are included or extra.
Plan the handover
Decide how customers reach a person in the new setup, and keep Intercom running until the new inbox and routing are tested.
Review after two weeks
Read conversations the AI handled, fix gaps in your content and check the first bill against your estimate.
Do you need a helpdesk at all?
If you're a small business without a support team, the question may not be which helpdesk to choose, but whether you need one. A plumber, a salon or a clinic usually gets the same questions about prices, availability, areas covered and policies. A website assistant that answers those from your own information covers most of it, and the rest goes to your phone or email. You can try that for free: create a Nexoply account, import your website and ask your own questions on a test page. For tools built for support teams, see the best AI customer service chatbots.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Intercom alternative for a small business?
If people on your team answer customers, Freshchat (free for up to 10 agents), Crisp (per workspace) or Tidio (free plan) cost less to start than Intercom. If no one is answering chats and you only need your website to answer common questions, a website assistant such as Nexoply (free, then from $19 a month) may be enough, but it isn't a helpdesk.
Is there a free alternative to Intercom?
Yes, with limits. As of October 7, 2026, Freshchat is free for up to 10 agents without the AI agent, Crisp has a free plan without AI, HubSpot has free chat tools with basic bots, and Tidio and Nexoply have free plans that include some AI. Intercom itself has only a 14-day trial.
How much does Intercom Fin cost?
As of October 7, 2026, Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, charged at most once per conversation and not when the customer asks for a person. Intercom's helpdesk seats are priced on top, and WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go. Check Intercom's pricing page for current seat prices.
Can I keep Fin and move to another helpdesk?
Yes. Fin also runs on other helpdesks, such as Zendesk, Salesforce or HubSpot, with a minimum monthly commitment. You keep paying per outcome for the AI, but your inbox and seats move to the other platform.
Which Intercom alternative is best for ecommerce?
Gorgias, for Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores: its AI can act on orders and it's never priced per agent. Tidio is a cheaper option for smaller stores that also want live chat.
Which alternative has the lowest price per AI resolution?
Among the per-resolution prices we could verify on October 7, 2026, HubSpot's Customer Agent is $0.50 per resolved conversation, Gorgias $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction and Intercom Fin $0.99 per outcome. Seats, plans and onboarding fees come on top, so compare the whole bill at your volume.
Is Nexoply an Intercom alternative?
Only for small businesses that need website answers rather than a support platform. Nexoply answers website visitors from your business information, with the AI included in every plan, but it has no team inbox, ticketing, human handover, email, WhatsApp or phone channels. Support teams should look at Zendesk, Freshchat or HubSpot instead.
