In short
The best AI customer service chatbot depends on whether people on your team answer customers too. Support teams that work in a helpdesk are best served by the AI agent built into it: Intercom Fin ($0.99 per outcome), Zendesk, Freshdesk or Freshchat with Freddy AI, Help Scout's AI Answers ($0.75 per resolution), Front's Autopilot, HubSpot's Customer Agent for HubSpot CRM users, and Gorgias for Shopify stores. A small business without a helpdesk that only wants its website to answer common questions can use Nexoply, free for 50 conversations a month and then from $19 a month with the AI included, but it has no ticketing and no inbox for your team. Prices were checked on each vendor's pricing page on October 7, 2026.
- Support teams on a helpdesk: Intercom Fin ($0.99 per outcome plus seats), Zendesk (automated resolutions on top of per-agent plans) and Freshdesk or Freshchat (500 Freddy AI sessions included, then $49 per 100).
- Small, email-first teams: Help Scout (from $25 per user a month billed annually; AI Answers $0.75 per resolution) or Front (Autopilot from $0.05 per conversation).
- Online stores: Gorgias, whose AI can act on Shopify orders; Tidio and Re:amaze for smaller shops.
- Low-cost help desks with AI in the plan: Zoho Desk (free for 3 users; paid from $7 per user a month billed annually) and LiveAgent.
- No helpdesk, just a website that answers common questions: Nexoply (Free, then $19, $49 or $99 a month with the AI included; no ticketing and no live-chat inbox).
How we chose and compared these tools
This guide covers AI for customer support: tools that answer customers' questions and, in most cases, pass the hard ones to a person. On October 7, 2026 we read each vendor's pricing page, and where needed its billing help pages, and compared:
- How the AI is billed: per resolution, per session, per conversation stage, AI credits, an AI add-on, or included in the plan.
- Human handoff: whether the AI passes a conversation to a person, and whether that is billed.
- Helpdesk or AI-only: ticketing and a shared inbox, or an AI assistant on its own.
- Channels and seats: website chat, email, messaging and phone; per-agent, per-workspace or no seat pricing.
- Free plan and trial, so you can test with your own questions first.
Several vendors show different prices by country. We say whether each price is billed monthly or annually and link every pricing page.

Quick picks by team and need
- Best for support teams: Intercom Fin inside a full helpdesk; Zendesk for larger teams across many channels.
- Best for HubSpot users: HubSpot Customer Agent, because it works with your CRM records.
- Best for small, email-first teams: Help Scout, with no charge when a customer asks for a person.
- Best for Shopify stores: Gorgias, whose AI can act on orders; Re:amaze or Tidio for smaller shops.
- Best low-cost help desk: Zoho Desk, or LiveAgent if you want AI without a usage bill.
- Best for a business with no support inbox: Nexoply, which answers website visitors from your own information and points them to your phone or email for the rest.
1. Intercom Fin: best for support teams with a helpdesk
Intercom is a customer service platform with a shared inbox, ticketing and a help center. Fin, its AI agent, answers from your help content and passes conversations to your team. Fin can also run on top of another helpdesk such as Zendesk, Salesforce or HubSpot.
- Pricing: no free plan; a 14-day trial without a credit card. Fin is $0.99 per outcome, at most once per conversation, on top of per-seat helpdesk plans (one full seat minimum). We don't quote the seat price because Intercom's page showed different figures on different loads. Fin on another helpdesk has a minimum monthly commitment. Intercom pricing.
- How the AI is billed: an outcome is counted when the customer confirms the answer solved it, doesn't ask for more help after Fin responds, or when Fin completes a workflow (a "Procedure"), including handoffs.
- Strengths: a capable AI agent, a mature helpdesk, pricing tied to outcomes.
- Considerations: seats plus outcomes are harder to predict at volume; WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go.
- Best for: software companies and mid-size support teams.
2. Zendesk: best for larger omnichannel support teams
Zendesk is a customer service suite for email, messaging, social and phone, with AI agents built into every plan.
- Pricing: per agent. The European pricing page, in euros, showed Support Team €19 per agent a month billed annually (€25 monthly), Suite Team €55 (€69) and Suite Professional €115 (€149); we couldn't verify US dollar prices. A 14-day trial. Zendesk pricing.
- How the AI is billed: 5 automated resolutions per agent a month are included on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional; each extra one costs €1.50 committed or €2.00 pay as you go. AI agents work on messaging and email; voice needs Zendesk Voice.
- Strengths: mature omnichannel ticketing, AI agents in every edition.
- Considerations: so few resolutions are included that at hundreds of AI chats a month the AI becomes most of the bill.
- Best for: mid-size and larger teams handling email, chat, social and phone in one place.
3. Freshdesk and Freshchat (Freddy AI): best for growing ticketing and chat teams
Freshworks sells Freshdesk (ticketing for email and a portal), Freshchat (live chat and messaging) and Freshdesk Omni (both). The Freddy AI Agent answers customers in each.
- Pricing: Freshdesk Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent a month billed annually (Omni $29, $79, $119), no free plan shown, 14-day trial. Freshchat is free for up to 10 agents without the AI agent, then $19, $49 or $79 per agent a month billed annually. Freshdesk pricing, Freshchat pricing.
- How the AI is billed: the first 500 AI sessions are included, then $49 per 100. A session is any interaction between a customer and the AI agent, resolved or not. Freddy AI Copilot for agents is $29 per agent a month billed annually.
- Strengths: a generous included AI allowance, free Freshchat seats for small teams.
- Considerations: unresolved sessions are billed too; several products and add-ons to choose between.
- Best for: small and mid-size teams that want AI included up to a few hundred chats a month.
4. HubSpot Customer Agent: best for HubSpot CRM users
HubSpot offers free live chat and basic bots, and an AI agent called Customer Agent in Service Hub that works with what your CRM knows about each customer.
- Pricing: Customer Agent needs Service Hub Professional ($90 per seat a month billed annually, $100 billed monthly) or Enterprise. Professional has a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee (Enterprise $3,500). HubSpot pricing.
- How the AI is billed: 50 HubSpot credits ($0.50) per resolved conversation. Professional includes 3,000 credits a month; extra credits are $0.01 each. A resolution is a conversation not handed to a person within 72 hours, or a qualified lead.
- Strengths: CRM context, outcome-based AI pricing, one system for sales and service.
- Considerations: the onboarding fee and seat price are a lot just for a chatbot.
- Best for: businesses whose customer records already live in HubSpot.
5. Help Scout (AI Answers): best for small, email-first teams
Help Scout is a shared inbox with live chat (Beacon) and a knowledge base (Docs) for small and mid-size teams. AI Answers answers customers and hands over to the team.
- Pricing: Free for up to 5 users (email only, no AI Answers). Standard $25, Plus $45 and Pro $75 per user a month billed annually; monthly-billing prices weren't shown. A 15-day trial. Help Scout pricing.
- How the AI is billed: $0.75 per resolution, billed monthly, at most once per conversation. Customers can ask for a person without triggering a charge, and you can set a monthly cap. New accounts get a 3-month free trial of AI Answers.
- Strengths: a clear price, no charge on requested handoffs, a spending cap.
- Considerations: per-user plans plus the add-on; phone only through integrations.
- Best for: small teams that handle support by email and chat, such as an online course business.
6. Front (Autopilot): best for email-heavy service teams
Front is a shared inbox with ticketing for teams that work mostly in email. Autopilot is its AI agent.
- Pricing: no free plan; a 14-day trial. Starter $25 per seat a month (up to 10 seats, one channel type), Professional $65 (omnichannel), Enterprise $105, billed annually. Copilot is $20 per seat a month, included in Enterprise. Front pricing.
- How the AI is billed: once per conversation at the highest stage reached: triage $0.05, handoff $0.39, resolution $0.89. No charge if the customer asks for a person or a teammate cancels. Front billing details.
- Strengths: detailed billing, cheap triage, a strong email inbox.
- Considerations: handoffs made by the AI are billed; Starter covers one channel type.
- Best for: agencies, logistics firms and property managers that live in email.
7. Gorgias: best for Shopify and ecommerce stores
Gorgias is a helpdesk for online stores, mainly on Shopify, whose AI agent can act on orders rather than only answer. It's never priced per agent.
- Pricing: billed monthly, Starter $10 for the helpdesk or $40 with the AI Agent (50 tickets and 30 automated interactions), Basic $60 ($90 with AI), Pro $360 ($550 with AI). A 7-day trial. Gorgias pricing.
- How the AI is billed: $1.00 per automated interaction on Starter, $0.90 on Basic and Pro, $0.85 on Advanced. A ticket resolved entirely by the AI is billed as a ticket and as an automated interaction. How Gorgias bills.
- Strengths: deep Shopify integration, AI that handles orders, no per-agent fees.
- Considerations: ecommerce only; two fees per AI-resolved ticket.
- Best for: stores where "Where is my order?" and returns are most of the work.
8. Zoho Desk (Zia): best low-cost help desk
Zoho Desk is a ticketing help desk with AI at every paid level: AI agents on Express, an Answer Bot for your knowledge base on Standard, and Zia, Zoho's AI, on Professional.

- How the AI is billed: no per-resolution price is published. Express AI agents use your own AI key or Zoho's model, with up to 30 million free tokens a month.
- Strengths: the lowest seat price here; WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and more from Standard.
- Considerations: the best AI features start on Professional.
- Best for: budget-conscious teams, especially those already using Zoho.
9. Re:amaze: best for small ecommerce support teams
Re:amaze (by GoDaddy) is a help desk and live chat for online stores and small teams, with an AI agent.
- Pricing: per team member a month: Basic $29 billed monthly ($26.10 annually), Pro $49, Plus $69; or Starter at $59 a month flat for unlimited team members and up to 500 responded conversations. A 14-day trial; no free plan. Re:amaze pricing.
- How the AI is billed: 5, 10 or 20 resolutions per user a month included (Basic, Pro, Plus), then $0.85 each.
- Strengths: simple pricing, a flat-price plan for small teams.
- Considerations: the included AI allowance is small; we couldn't confirm AI on Starter.
- Best for: small shops answering in one inbox.
10. LiveAgent: best help desk with AI included in the plan
LiveAgent is a help desk with ticketing, live chat, a call center and social channels. Its AI chatbot and answer assistant are included in every plan.
- Pricing: per agent a month billed monthly: Small $19, Medium $35, Large $59, Enterprise $85 ($15, $29, $49, $69 billed annually). A 30-day trial; no free plan. LiveAgent pricing.

- Considerations: the free AI budget could change.
- Best for: small teams answering email, chat and phone.
11. Text (LiveChat): best live chat with AI resolutions included
LiveChat's pricing page now shows Text, from the same company: live chat, an inbox, ticketing and an AI agent with human takeover.

- Considerations: human and Lyro conversations are counted separately; branding removal is an add-on from Growth.
- Best for: small shops where someone can take over chats. See Nexoply vs Tidio.
13. Crisp: best flat-priced shared inbox with AI
Crisp is a shared inbox and live chat priced per workspace, not per seat. The autonomous AI Agent is on Plus.
- Pricing: Free (no AI); Mini $45 a month, Essentials $95, Plus $295 per workspace. Crisp pricing.
- How the AI is billed: included AI credits: $5 on Mini (about 90 automated conversations by Crisp's estimate), $25 on Essentials (about 450), $75 on Plus (about 1,350). Extra credit prices aren't published.

- Considerations: the AI Agent and branding removal need the $295 plan.
- Best for: small teams answering on several channels.
14. Nexoply: best for small businesses that don't need a helpdesk
Nexoply is not a helpdesk. It's an AI assistant for a small business website: you enter or import your services, prices, FAQs, policies and opening hours, and it answers visitors only from that information, in 12 languages. When it doesn't know, it says so and points to your phone, email or contact page.
- Pricing: Free with 50 conversations a month (no credit card), then Starter $19, Business $49 and Pro $99 a month, AI included, no seats or per-resolution fees. Yearly billing gives two months free. Nexoply pricing.
- Strengths: imports your website for you to approve; installs with one line of code; every conversation is in your dashboard, and unanswered questions become FAQs in one click.

AI resolution rate and handoff: what to ask vendors
Many vendors advertise the share of conversations their AI resolves. Your rate depends on your questions, your help content and the vendor's definition, so we don't quote rates here. Ask these questions and check the answers in a trial:
- What counts as a resolution? A customer who confirms it's solved, one who stops replying, or a workflow that ends in a handoff? Intercom, Front, HubSpot and Gorgias each use different rules and time windows.
- Am I charged when the customer asks for a person? Help Scout and Front say no.
- Is an unresolved chat billed? Per-session and per-engaged-conversation pricing count it; per-resolution pricing doesn't.
- Can I cap AI spending? Help Scout offers a monthly cap; ask the others.
- What happens after hours? If the AI hands over at 11 p.m. and nobody is online, does the customer get a ticket, an email or nothing?
- Does the AI answer only from my content and say when it doesn't know? A wrong answer about a refund costs more than no answer.
- Can I read every AI conversation? You need transcripts to find gaps.
Do you need a helpdesk or just an AI chatbot?
A helpdesk is software for a team: tickets, a shared inbox, assignment and reports, with an AI agent that hands over to people. An AI chatbot on its own answers website visitors and leaves everything else to your phone and email.
- You need a helpdesk if two or more people answer customers, you want email, WhatsApp and chat in one place, customers need order lookups or refunds, or issues take several replies over days.
- An AI chatbot is enough if you're a one-person business or small team, most questions repeat (prices, hours, service areas, policies), and you're often busy with customers: a plumber under a sink, a stylist with a client.
- Start small: a chatbot can answer repeat questions now, and a helpdesk can come later when you hire people to answer customers.
For website chatbots more broadly, see the best AI chatbots for business.
How to test an AI customer service tool before you buy
Collect 20 real questions
Take them from last month's emails, chats and calls, including awkward ones such as a refund outside your policy.
Load your real help content
Use your actual FAQs, policies and prices, not a demo knowledge base.
Test the handoff
Ask for a person during business hours and late at night, and check where the conversation lands.
Check the usage meter
See how many resolutions, sessions or credits your test chats used, and price your monthly volume from that.
Read every transcript
Look for invented answers. "I don't know, here's how to reach us" is safer than a guess.
Try Nexoply if you don't need a helpdesk
If you want your website to answer common questions on its own, without a support inbox, you can test Nexoply for free: create a free account, import your website, ask your own questions on a test page, then add one line of code to your site. See how it works. If your team also needs live chat, the tools above fit better.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI chatbot for customer service?
For support teams with a helpdesk, Intercom Fin, Zendesk and Freshdesk or Freshchat are strong choices; Help Scout suits small email-first teams and Gorgias suits Shopify stores. For a small business without a support team that only wants its website to answer common questions, Nexoply is simpler and costs from $19 a month with the AI included, but it has no ticketing or human inbox.
How much does AI customer service software cost?
As of October 7, 2026, per-resolution AI costs $0.50 to $1.00 per resolved conversation (HubSpot $0.50 in credits, Help Scout $0.75, Re:amaze $0.85, Intercom Fin $0.99), usually on top of per-seat plans. Freshworks includes 500 AI sessions, LiveAgent includes free AI credits, and Nexoply includes conversations in plans from $19 a month. See our cost guide.
Can an AI chatbot hand a conversation over to a person?
Most helpdesk tools in this guide can: Intercom, Zendesk, Freshworks, HubSpot, Help Scout, Front, Gorgias, Tidio and others pass it to your team's inbox. Nexoply has no inbox, so it can't hand over live; it points visitors to your phone, email, WhatsApp or booking page.
Am I charged when the AI hands a customer to a person?
It depends. Help Scout and Front don't charge when the customer asks for a person, but Front charges $0.39 when Autopilot hands over on its own, and Intercom's outcome definition includes workflows that end in a handoff. Read each vendor's billing page.
What is a good AI resolution rate?
There's no reliable benchmark, and vendor figures use their own definitions. Your rate depends on how repetitive your questions are and how complete your help content is, so test with your own questions in a trial and count the resolutions yourself.
Do I need a helpdesk to use an AI chatbot?
No. Helpdesks suit teams that share an inbox and work tickets. If most questions are about prices, hours and policies, a website AI chatbot such as Nexoply can answer them, and you keep handling the rest by phone and email.
Which AI customer service tools have a free plan?
As of October 7, 2026: Freshchat (10 agents, no AI agent), Help Scout (5 users, no AI Answers), Zoho Desk (3 users), HubSpot (basic bots), Tidio (50 conversations a month and 50 Lyro conversations one-off), Crisp (no AI) and Nexoply (50 conversations a month, AI included).
Why isn't Nexoply first in this list?
Nexoply publishes this guide, but it isn't a helpdesk, and most people looking for customer service software need one. We list Nexoply for the need it's built for: a small business website that answers common questions on its own at a low, predictable price.
